To Grandmother’s House I Go...
There are a few things that you can count on when going to
Grandma Rising’s house: there will always be a gift waiting on your bed,
Cocktail Hour starts at 5:00pm and the to-do list is longer than there is time
to do it in. There will also be at least one trip to the Field House (aka an
old golf course clubhouse and where I’ve celebrated alternating Thanksgivings
and Christmases for as long as I can remember).
| The Field House |
My reason for making a trip down here (here being
Brightwaters, NY on Long Island) was two-pronged: return some furniture to
Grandma and squeeze in a visit before heading out to Vancouver. You see, it was
supposed to be a Christmas year in LI (at the Field House), but then our work
permits were expedited and our move date was moved to December 1st.
And as it turns out, Christmas in LI has been indefinitely postponed in favor
of annual Thanksgivings, so the whole alternating holiday schedule has gone
right out the window. And since we switched holidays last year, spending
Thanksgiving in LI instead of in Saratoga with Matt’s family, like we were
supposed to, we’d already planned to do a Bruhns Family Thanksgiving this year.
Whew!
Anyhow, I guess going forward our whole alternating holiday
schedule will be moot, considering we probably won’t make two trips back East
so close together. We’ll have to squeeze visits in with both families, or make
other arrangements. Alas, I’ve gone off on quite a tangent… but all that is
to say that things will be different, and it will be another year until I see Grandma
and Long Island again.

PS… the gift was “fly cookies”, tonight’s cocktail was a
Jack & Ginger and the to-do list is as long as ever…
